How to qualify for SSI in Alabama?

By Hogan Smith

If you live in Alabama and have limited income and resources, you may be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on your work history, SSI is a needs-based program designed to help disabled individuals with little or no income. Understanding the qualification rules is key to successfully applying.

Here’s what you need to know about how to qualify for SSI in Alabama.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for SSI in Alabama, you must meet these core criteria:

  • Age or Disability: You must be age 65 or older, blind, or disabled. "Disabled" means a medical condition that prevents you from working and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
  • Limited Income: Your monthly income must fall below the limits set by the SSA. This includes wages, Social Security benefits, and other income sources.
  • Limited Resources: Your total countable assets must be $2,000 or less for individuals, or $3,000 or less for couples. This includes cash, bank accounts, and property, but not your primary home or one vehicle.

Be a U.S. Citizen or Qualifying Non-Citizen

You must be a U.S. citizen, or in some cases, a lawfully admitted non-citizen who meets additional requirements set by the SSA. You must also reside in the U.S. or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Live in Alabama

SSI is a federal program, but Alabama may provide a state supplement for certain recipients. You must reside in Alabama and not be absent from the state for a full calendar month or 30 consecutive days.

Have a Qualifying Disability (If Under 65)

If you’re under age 65, you must prove that you meet the SSA’s definition of disability, which includes:

  • A medically determinable physical or mental impairment
  • That prevents you from engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)
  • That has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death

The SSA may request medical records, doctor’s statements, and even schedule a consultative exam to determine your disability status.

Apply Correctly and Thoroughly

You can apply for SSI in Alabama in the following ways:

  • Online: Start the process at www.ssa.gov, but note that online applications for SSI are limited to adults aged 18–65 with no recent work history.
  • By Phone: Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment.
  • In Person: Visit your local Social Security office in Alabama (appointments recommended).

Be prepared to provide detailed information about your financial situation, living arrangements, medical conditions, and more.

Keep Your Records Updated

After applying, it’s important to:

  • Respond quickly to any SSA requests
  • Keep copies of all documents
  • Report changes in your income, resources, or living situation
  • Follow up on your application status regularly

Failure to update the SSA can result in a denial or loss of benefits.
