What are the income requirements for SSDI in Alabama?

If you're applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Alabama, understanding the income requirements is crucial. SSDI is designed for individuals who have a qualifying disability and sufficient work history, regardless of their current income or assets.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) Limits

To qualify for SSDI, your monthly earnings must not exceed the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) threshold. These limits are:

  • $1,620 per month for non-blind individuals
  • $2,700 per month for individuals who are blind

Earning above these amounts may disqualify you from receiving SSDI benefits, as it suggests the ability to engage in substantial work activity.

Work Credits Requirement

Eligibility for SSDI also depends on your work history. You earn work credits based on your annual income, with a maximum of four credits per year. In 2025:

  • You earn 1 credit for every $1,810 in wages or self-employment income
  • To earn the maximum 4 credits in a year, you need to earn $7,240

Generally, you need 40 credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years, to qualify for SSDI. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

No Asset Limits for SSDI

Unlike Supplemental Security Income (SSI), SSDI does not take into account your assets or unearned income like savings, investments, or property. The focus is strictly on your ability to work and your employment history.
